Winter in Norfolk

Short-eared owl on the ground

Had the opportunity to spend a few days in Norfolk during December, which meant a spot of birding and visiting some of my favourite places like Cley and Welney. It was noticeable that there were less wintering ducks and geese around than in previous years, which may be a knock on effect of the bird flu pandemic which has hit birds hard this year.

The highlight though was finding five short-eared owls roosting and then watching one hunting before it dropped to the ground and watched us.
