Sgurr Mor – Fannichs

Loch a Mhadaidh and Sgurr Mor

An early start today for a walk to the lochan below Sgurr Mor. This isn’t the traditional route up Sgurr Mor but a more gentle walk from the car park at Loch Droma following the course of Allt a Mhadaidh to the lochan at its outfall.

It was looking like a hot day forecast so the early start was to try and avoid the worst of the midday heat. This meant I got a great view of the sunrise and a superb cloud inversion as I got further up the hill track. One thing I hadn’t been anticipating was the number of midgies out and about at 06:00! It did make for a good motivation to push on up the hill until I found a bit of breeze.

The views once I got to Loch a Mhadaidh were well worth the sweat and midgies though.

On the way back down I heard a greenshank calling somewhere on Loch Droma. By the time I reached the dam crossing it had made its way right up towards me so I got some good views of it feeding on the loch edge.
