Last week I had the opportunity to go over to Caithness and Orkney to carry out some ornithological surveys and ecological watching briefs.
The weather was a mixed bag, including snow on the beach and then blue skies fifteen minutes later but it also provided some great sunsets.
The surveys didn’t disappoint with several red-throated divers, great northern divers and even a surprise black-throated diver. It was also good to see a few bonxies (great skua) about, as they had a terrible time with bird flu last year.
Another highlight was recording the first groups of whimbrel returning for the summer.
